Copenhagen Zoo

It was a chilly day on our trip to the Copenhagen Zoo and we are so glad the rain held out. The zoo sprawls across two large sections connected by a tunnel, and organized by region.

In yet another instance of the Danish people trusting that people won’t be morons and try to jump into the animal pens, you can actually get pretty close to the animals. for example, here is a pregnant polar bear clawing at the side of her pen in a way that made me move my children further away from the edge.

The new elephant house was really interesting. The animals are really fascinating anyway but we really got to get close to them — as in, the kids got to play in their pen and hide carrots in the dirt (watch out for the poop!) and then watch the elephants dig them up and eat them.

There was also thus fun stump.

And an old jeep.

And the kids ate hotdogs and chips for the millionth time this week.

The real highlight, though, was the children’s zoo. There were animals to pet, a rickety, splintered maze for the kids to get lost in, and a rickety, splintered play structure for the kids to climb on.

The baby goat petting area was a big hit.

Ellie felt a bit territorial about “her” goat.

On our way home, we walked through the pedestrian only shopping district, though we entered on the seedy, Downtown Crossing-esque side. We were feeling super unimpressed and a bit grossed out until we hit the nicer end, and then wished we could linger and have a drink outside in the square.

We did get to hit the Lego flagship store though 🙂

The night ended kind of tragically when we attempted to go out to dinner as a family a) on a day the the Danish football team was playing and b) at a restaurant. We definitely learned our lesson and I’m glad at least Greg can laugh about it.
